Recent developments in technological innovations in scramjet engines: A review

This paper aims to review various challenges associated with various components used in the scramjet engines along with various research that has been done in the field of scramjet technologies. One of the major challenges in scramjet propulsion system is inefficient combustion, as in the combustor fuel has to be added and mixed into the air that is already moving at very high speed. The time for which the air is present inside the combustor before leaving is of the order of few milliseconds so in that few milliseconds we have to inject the fuel and ensure that fuel is mixed properly and combustion has to take place. Thus the low residence time of air inside the combustor decreases the combustion efficiency of scramjet engines. Another problem is to ignite the air fuel mixture and keep the ignition sturdy at such high speeds.(c) 2020 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
