Process development method for high-speed gluing and a battery-production case study

Abstract There is a number of assembly processes where the glue set time is a decisive limitation of the production throughput. Such examples can be found in micro-electronics and battery production. This article investigates into concepts, influencing factors, experimental process development, and process integration of high-speed gluing. A method for experimental process development is proposed, which consists of a requirements analysis, a process selection, a process analysis and four possible validation stages. The evolution of the test-bench is presented for the different validation stages, where the glue application, the joining and the subsequent application of shear load force can be applied below a second. The method is evaluated in a case study which originates from a high-speed battery electrode stacking process. Based on this case study, the cost and benefits reduction/increase of simplification and/or amendments to this method are discussed.
