•This is a cross-sectional survey of Tier 1 patients awaiting general/plastic surgical procedures during the pandemic identifying the following reported barriers to returning for surgical care.•Fear of contracting COVID19 in the hospital.•Fear of being alone in the hospital.•Uncertainty about timeline for rescheduling contributed to ongoing concerns.•The importance of this study is that education about COVID-19 and communication partially mitigated patients' fears.
