•Multiscale dimensioning of coffee plants was performed over plant ontogeny.•Ageing provoked shift of metamer and berry production from low to up layers.•In low layers, berry production shifted to high branching orders in later ontogeny.•Planting density strongly impacted on earlier plant structure, LAI, and yield.•Planting pattern impacted on older plant structures, LAI, LA berry−1, and yield.
