The invention discloses a method and device for displaying video data and image data. According to a method for displaying video data, the video data is converted into video frames that are displayedat a designated frame speed. The method comprises following steps: processing the video data to obtain a sequence of a phase modulator control signal at the frame speed; applying the phase modulator control signal to an irradiated two dimensional spatial phase modulator; and guiding the obtained phase-modulated light to the viewing region.
