A qualitative study exploring caregivers’ experiences, perspectives, and expectations for precision medicine in epilepsy in South Africa

•This study details the perceptions and experiences of families living with a child with complex epilepsy in a resource limited country inclusive of the concept of Precision Medicine.•Precision Medicine initiatives which were explored included genetics, pharmacogenomics, and mHealth such as wearable technology and a smartphone app.•Caregivers are conflicted in considering epilepsy as a medical condition and most have difficulty adhering to treatment.•The potential for Precision Medicine to benefit the care of children with epilepsy needs contextualization within personal beliefs and experiences.
