•Silencing of MICAL1 could reduce the levels of Nrf2.•Silencing of MICAL1 could increase the expression of Bax and C-caspase 3, decrease the levels of Bcl-2 and Beclin1 and LC3B.•Therefore, MICAL1 is a potential target gene for SCI clinical therapy.
