•Welding metal with laminations leads to non-uniform load of the weld joints.•Non-uniform load results in layerwise destruction of defective areas.•Application of magnetic control is inefficient for detect laminations below 100 μm.•It is necessary to complete the ultrasonic wall thickness test throughout pipe perimeter.
