Comparison of new and conventional processing methods for their effects on physical properties of fish feed

•A new method based on high moisture extrusion was developed for making aquafeed.•The new feed was softer in texture, smaller in cross-section and more durable and water stable than conventional feed.•Addition of wheat flour into feed mash had less effect on physical properties of new feed than conventional feed.•The new extrusion method offers a promising strategy to mitigate water pollution associated with aquaculture.
