•Thiol capped CdSe-MSA photocatalysts were prepared incolloidalsystemsby in situ chemical route.•Stacking fault was developed during the formation or growth of nuclei initiate phase transition.•Alignment deviation of atoms indicated the presence of planar stacking fault along the (002) plane.•Adsorption-degradation synergy of CdSe-MSA to remove dye RB5 was studied.
