Severity of shock, rate of physiological stabilization and organ failure in healthy women admitted to the intensive care unit following major peripartum hemorrhage: A retrospective, descriptive study

•Women admitted to the ICU after major PPH may require hysterectomy and repeat surgery for ongoing hemorrhage.•PPH and massive transfusion are not associated with renal, pulmonary or coagulation abnormalities.•Length of ICU stay and mechanical ventilation are usually short (median < 48 h) after PPH.•Women who received more blood products and fluids have longer ICU stays and require more vasoactive medications.
