•Ferritin interacts with chlorogenic acid-Fe(III) complex via hydrogen bonds.•Chlorogenic acid promotes oxidative deposition and release iron ion from ferritin.•Chlorogenic acid shows a high efficiency in Fe(II) chelation and •OH capture.•Chlorogenic acid could reduce the ferritin polymerization induced by ion iron.
