Durable self-polishing antifouling Cu-Ti coating by a micron-scale Cu/Ti laminated microstructure design

•Cu-Ti composite coating with micron-sized laminated-structure was developed by plasma spraying.•Significant antibacterial and antifouling efficiency of ∼100 % was obtained.•Micro-galvanic dissolution between Cu/Ti laminates was responsible for the remarkable antifouling performance.•Controlled slow release of Cu ions and self-polishing effect were realized.•Cu-Ti coating presented much higher mechanical durability than CO-SPC coating.
