•Bowland shale end members are reacted with simulated hydraulic fracturing fluids.•Higher fluid acidity and temperature enhance mobilisation of most elements.•Higher rock/fluid ratio increases buffering capacity.•Fluid pH buffering favours immobilisation of Al, Mn, Fe, Pb, Ba.•Sr mobilisation is controlled by calcite dissolution, and As by pyrite dissolution.
