2•A series of visible-light-response TPP/defect-rich BiOCl composites were synthesized for the first time.2•2 wt% TPP/defect-rich BiOCl exhibited the optimal photocatalytic activity for the degradation of antibiotics.2•The introduction of macrocyclic TPP enhanced visible light absorption and promoted charge carriers separation.2•Holes, O2•− and •OH were the dominant active contributors in the photocatalytic reaction.2•The TPP/defect-rich BiOCl composites presented excellent cycling stability.
