Early maternal separation and development of left-behind children under 3 years of age in rural China

•The prevalence of social emotional delay of left-behind children under 3 was 38.1%.•Earlier maternal separation was associated with an elevated risk of delay in social emotional development.•Higher risk of fine motor development delay was associated with earlier maternal separation.
