•Thiolated chitosan (CS-TBA) was prepared using 2-iminothiolane.•CaCO3 particles with mesoporous structure were synthesized.•CS-TBA/CaCO3 dual microspheres were fabricated by ionic gelation method.•CS-TBA/CaCO3 dual microspheres can serve as a dual-drug delivery system.
