Investigation on Fault Ride-through Capability of DFIG-Based Wind Farm using the Saturated Iron-Core SFCL

With high penetration of wind energy into the power grid, the doubly fed induction generator (DFIG), as one of the most popular wind turbines, has developed rapidly during the last several decades. But the DFIG based farm is very sensitive to voltage drop and will be easy to disconnect with the power grid during faults and disturbances. Hence, it's necessary to enhance the fault ride-through capability of the DFIG based wind farm. In this paper, the application of saturated iron-core superconducting fault current limiter (SFCL) is proposed to limit fault current and improve the FRT capability of the DFIG based wind farm. A 220-kV double-circuit transmission system with saturated iron-core SFCL is simulated by using the Electromagnetic Transients Program including DC software package. Results from simulation tests have demonstrated the SFCL is effective in decreasing fault current and improving the FRT capacity of the DFIG based farm.
