•Small-molecule virus co-imprinting was investigated for enhancing the sensitivity and selectivity of an MIP-based sensor.•Co-imprinting with dengue virus produced greater sensitivity to TNT than conventional imprinting.•The largest margin of separation between different explosives was observed from the DNT-virus co-imprinted sensor.
