摘要
•Senecio coronatus (izonkozonko, ubulibazi) is a popular Zulu paediatric medicine.•It is a traditional enema used for purification of infants during weaning.•The study revealed that this species does not contain pyrrolizidine alkaloids.•Infant fatalities were caused by a Senecio species rich in retrorsine-N-oxide.•A sensitive UPLC-MS/MS method was used for detecting trace amounts of PA.
