•Efficacy of SPSRS app on StD was examined through a RCT.•Participants with StD were randomized into an experimental or control group.•The experimental (vs control) group displayed reduced depressive symptoms.•SPSRS app may be an alternative strategy for improving depressive symptoms of StD.
