•An ageing bias free article level scientometric indicator is defined.•The Time Debiased Significance Score (TDSS) eliminates any global trend.•The TDSS uses the structure of the citation network.•A procedure for endowing TDSS with accuracy estimation capabilities is presented.•The indicator has additional beneficial properties such as domain independence.
