•Effects of drainage optimization of paddy field watershed on sustainable agriculture were evaluated.•Increasing paddy fields Hmax reduced surface runoff and P loss without yield loss.•P loss from paddy fields was effectively intercepted by ditches and ponds.•Optimal drainage was effective for water resource utilization and pollution control.
