•A hot-pressing method for producing preforms is proposed to make open-cell foams.•Granules' deformation leads to the varied stacking densities of preforms.•Open-cell foams with porosity over 80% can be obtained from CaCl2 preforms.•The enlarged channel size is crucial for the rapid removal of space-holders.
