•Exploratory modeling can be the key enabler of decision support in the Anthropocene.•We formulate a taxonomy of exploratory approaches to modeling human-natural systems.•The taxonomy systematically analyzes different ways of dealing with uncertainty.•We evaluated past research against this taxonomy to discover benefits and challenges.•This uncovers future research for modeling uncertain human-natural systems with stakeholders.
