Correlation Between Physical Activity And Prognostic Markers In Patients With Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis

Introduction: In this study, we investigated the correlation between physical activity parameters and prognostic factors in patients with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF). Method: Physical activities of patients with IPF are measured with Sense Wear Armband device for three days. Demographic data, pulmonary function tests (FVC L /%; DLCO%), 6 minute walking distance (6MWD), GAP (gender -age-physiology) index score, dyspnea severity (mMRC), fatigue severity (Multidimensional Fatigue Inventory, MFI-20) are recorded. Results: Twenty eight IPF cases (23men, 5women, age:65.36 8.32) were included in the study. FVC:81±15%,DLCO:57±16%,6MWD:401±89m,GAP index score:3.2±1.07 (16 stage 1,12 stage 2). There was a correlation between the number of steps and the GAP index score (rs=-0.428, p=0.023), FVC (rs=0.415, p=0.028), DLCO (rs=0.623, p<0.001), 6MWD (rs=0.636, p<0.001), SpO2 (rs=0.418, p=0.027), desaturation in exercise (rs=-0.506, p=0.006), MMRC (rs=-0.446,p=0.017), age (rs=-477, p=0.01), dyspnea at rest (rs=-0.625, p<0.001).In multiple regression analysis, the number of steps was independently associated with 6MWD (p=0.004). There was a correlation between the mean physical activity time (3.0 METs) and the GAP index score (rs=-0.586, p=0.001), FVC (rs=0.487, p=0.009), DLCO (rs=0.688, p<0.001), 6MWD (rs=0.594, p=0.001), Sp02 (rs=0.517, p=0.005), desaturation in exercise (rs=-0.528, p=0.004), MMRC (rs=-0.553, p=0.004), MFI20 (rs=-425, p=0.024), age (rs=-511,p=0.005), dyspnea at rest (rs=-0.707, p<0.001). In multiple regression analysis, mean physical activity time (3.0 METs) was independently associated with 6MWD (p=0.023) and GAP index (p=0.006). Conclusion: Physical activity parameters in IPF cases were associated with prognostic markers such as GAP index, lung functions, and 6MWD.
