•This study develops the CSQ-REW model based on the service quality gap, competitor quality gap and FMEA.•The CSQ-REW model included eight strategy patterns.•This study determines the strategic implications of service attributes of wedding banquet halls by the CSQ-REW model.•The wedding banquet halls can formulate service improvement strategies based on the analysis results of the CSQ-REW model.
