•The emplacement of diabases in the Cuoke area occurred at ca. 1.14 Ga.•The SW Yangtze Block was dominated by continental rift during 1.2–1.1 Ga.•Intraplate magmatism occurred over the Yangtze Block prior to its involvement in the Rodinia assembly.
