•Nodules formed on Zr-2.5Nb and Zr-2.5Nb-0.5Cu in CO2+2%O2 mixture with contaminants•Ethylene present in the gas mixture led to nodular corrosion only with radiation•Presence of HNO3, Cl2, HCOOH and cold moisture led to nodules without radiation•The severity and extent of nodular corrosion varied among contaminants•Nodular corrosion with all contaminants explained by the global mechanism in gas
