•A novel proper orthogonal decomposition model that is four orders of magnitude faster than corresponding full-order model.•Precomputed time coefficients of reduced order model by writing governing equations in zeta variables.•Stability of reduced-order model obtained using: penalty method, artificial dissipation, and a modified number of modes.•Reduced-order model tested and validated on several cases, from one-dimensional to complex, three-dimensional flows.
