Fluorescent photochromic complex of 1,8-naphthalimide derivative and benzopyrane containing benzo-18-crown-6 ether

•Supramolecular complex of photochromic benzopyran and naphthalimide derivative was prepared and characterized.•Combination of two functional molecules in a complex affects both the photochromic and fluorescence characteristics of the components.•Compared to free benzopyran, the bleaching rate in the complex increases by 5 - 6 times.•Fluorescence of supramolecular complex can be switched on and off by photoinduced conversion between the closed and open forms of benzopyran.
