•Pseudototal-Cd and Pb concentration in soils were dependent on parent material.•Crop system was not associated with Cd and Pb concentrations in soils.•Cd concentration in yerba mate leaves was directly related to Zn nutrition.•Ingestion of Cd and Pb from yerba mate infusion is low.•Current legislation for Cd and Pb in yerba mate in South America is unrealistic.
