摘要
•There has been much debate over the preferred location for needle decompression of a tension pneumothorax.•Chest wall thickness (CWT) is related to BMI.•In overweight- and obese subjects, mean CWT is thinner in the 2nd intercostal space in the midclavicular line (ICS2-MCL) compared to the 4th/5th ICS in the anterior axillary line (ICS 4/5-AAL).•Theoretical changes of successful needle decompression of a tension pneumothorax using standard equipment are significantly higher in ICS2-MCL compared to ICS 4/5-AAL.
