•Betanin, rutin, kaempferol, quercetin and other compounds were present in EECF.•EECF and its bioactive compounds induced HepG2 cell apoptosis.•EECF and quercetin significantly reduced tumor growth in nude mice.•EECF could act as a potential source of liver cancer chemoprevention.
