On-to-off-path gaze shift cancellations lead to gaze concentration in cognitively loaded car drivers: A simulator study exploring gaze patterns in relation to a cognitive task and the traffic environment

•Cognitive load inhibits on-to-off-path, but not off-to-on-path, gaze shifts.•Inhibited gaze shifts lead to off-path glance cancellations, not delays.•The on-to-off-path gaze shift cancellations are what cause gaze concentration.•Timing of off-path glances in relation to the environment is unaffected.
