摘要
Nano-filler strengthened fiber reinforced polymer-based composite repair systems are recently being used as a promising solution for repair and rehabilitation of transmission pipelines. To increase the efficiency of pipeline repair system using these composites, the present study focuses on characterizing the effect of using nano-silica in glass fiber reinforced polymer (GFRP) composite wrap. Typically, one such widely used pipeline repair system uses 2 layers of Chopped Strand Mat and 4 layers of Woven Roving Mat. In view of this, to assess and characterize the repair system, same configuration of fibers with varying wt.% of nano-silica has been used to fabricate the composite laminates. Tensile, flexure and static indentation tests are performed to determine the mechanical properties of the prepared composites. Ballistic impact test is performed to check the impact energy absorption capability of nano-silica modified GFRP composites. GFRP composites reinforced with nano-silica showed enhanced mechanical behavior as compared to the composites without nano-silica. Upon characterization, the combination of nano-silica reinforced epoxy with best mechanical and impact properties is chosen and is used to repair the defected pipes followed by the pipe pressure testing.
