Thermal niche for germination and early seedling establishment at the leading edge of two pine species, under a changing climate

•Temperature has no differential effect on the biomass allocation in these species.•Our results suggest different germination strategies at low temperatures.•Higher mean annual temperatures would increase seedling survival.•The overall thermal responses are the same for different growing stages.•Climate change could compromise the success of establishment and seedling survival.
