Self-supporting nanoporous Ni/metallic glass composites with hierarchically porous structure for efficient hydrogen evolution reaction

•The nanoporous Ni/metallic glass composite with a hierarchically porous structure was prepared by tailoring the residual stress of precursors.•The cost-effective nanoporous Ni/MG composites possess promising HER performance and long-term stability.•Our findings provide a new strategy for developing free-standing, low-cost catalysts for efficient HER.
