•Oxygen pressure and buffer layer make Y2NiMnO6 films close to bulk in magnetism.•Suitable oxygen pressure facilitates lattice relaxation and enhances magnetization.•CaTiO3 buffer layer affects lattice structure, Mn ions’ oxidization and spin state.
