The effectiveness of taxes in decreasing candy purchases

•We examine changes in candy purchases due to a tax.•In Colorado, candy containing flour is exempt from the tax.•We find that taxed candy purchases fall by at least 11.2%.•We find no change in tax-exempt candy purchases.
