•Dominant height model was developed for loblolly pine in the Western Gulf, US.•LASSO method was used to incorporate climatic variables in our best model.•Inclusion of climatic indicators resulted in bias reduction and smaller error.•Water deficit was an important driver of loblolly pine's site productivity.
