•Drip fertigation with urea and (NH4)2SO4 performed better than NH4NO3 and Ca(NO3)2.•(NH4)2SO4 reduced N loss by 25 %–31 % than other N fertilizers during wheat season.•Urea reduced N loss by 69 %–77 % than other N fertilizers during maize season.
