•Susceptibility of biparental apricot population to Monilinia laxa was investigated.•Scopolin was more abundant in inoculated branches of tolerant parental cultivar.•Branches of susceptible parental cultivar contained less hydroxyacetophenone hexoside.•Phenolics present in apricot branches exhibit antifungal activity.
