•Distinguishing skeletal morphology of domestic and wild canids can be challenging.•Canids frequently occur in archaeological assemblages across the Northwest Coast.•Domestic dogs are the most common species designation, while wild canids are rare.•Among wild canids, wolves occur much more frequently than foxes and coyotes.•Canid abundance is highest in areas where small dogs were bred for wool production.•Domestic dogs occupy a large role in Northwest Coast social and economic practices.
