•Two cobalt based MOFs with tricarboxylate ligand and nitrogen donor ancillary ligand synthesized and characterized.•The effect of ancillary ligand on the architecture of MOFs studied.•Both the MOFs have been used as photocatalysts to photodegrade aromatic dyes methyl violet.
