Farm-level exploration of economic and environmental impacts of sustainable intensification of rice-wheat cropping systems in the Eastern Indo-Gangetic plains

•Farms with higher resource endowment had larger outcome spaces.•Optimization results highlight the trade-off between profit and water use.•Environmental objectives could be improved with re-allocation of current crops.•Sustainable intensification with mung bean was not beneficial for all farm types.
