Effects of maize as a catch crop on subsequent garland chrysanthemum and green soybean production in soil with excess nitrogen

•Maize, as a catch crop, removed residual N from greenhouse soil, and reduced soil penetration resistance.•Maize cultivation improved the yield and nitrate content of garland chrysanthemum.•Maize cultivation increased nodule formation and yield of green soybean.•The effect of catch crop cultivation on yield was dependent on the type of subsequent crop.
