•We study the effect of an international mobility grant on researches.•Unique data from the swiss national foundation allow us to implement a regression discontinuity design.•Mobility also beyond the duration of the grant increases without turning into permanent migration.•Scientific output quality increases, but not quantity and probability of professorship.•Collaboration with highly productive new coauthors and exploration of new topics increases.
