•Maltene fractions of hydrothermal petroleum were analyzed using FT-ICR MS.•Detected compounds are dominated by O heteroatomic components.•These compounds are largely derived from terrestrial organic matter.•The associated hydrocarbons were thermochemically weathered at the greatest depth.
