•Experimental setup built up to measure axial, radial and circumferential temperature profiles in a flighted rotary drum.•Influence of operating parameters on the temperature drop during cooling is measured.•Increasing the filling degree leads to lower temperature drop rates.•Increasing the volumetric airflow rate up to 600 m3/h leads to slightly increased temperature drop rates.•Highest influence is seen for the rotational speed, whose increase leads to higher temperature drop rates.
